Background of the Study
Urbanization is a dynamic process that transforms rural areas into urban centers, often accompanied by significant socio-economic changes. In Ikorodu Local Government Area, Lagos State, rapid urbanization has been linked to an increase in criminal activities. As populations swell and infrastructure struggles to keep pace, issues such as inadequate housing, unemployment, and social disorganization emerge (Akinpelu, 2023). These factors can create conditions conducive to criminal behavior, as residents may resort to illegal activities out of necessity or as a response to socio-economic marginalization. Research has demonstrated that urban environments characterized by overcrowding and insufficient public services often experience higher rates of crime, including theft, assault, and organized criminal activities (Ogunyemi, 2024). In Ikorodu, the rapid pace of urban growth, coupled with inefficient urban planning and governance, has exacerbated these challenges. This study aims to examine the role of urbanization in the rise of criminal activities by analyzing demographic trends, urban infrastructure, and crime statistics. An interdisciplinary approach will be adopted, incorporating urban studies, sociology, and criminology to provide a comprehensive understanding of how urbanization influences crime patterns. The findings will inform future urban planning and policy interventions aimed at mitigating the adverse effects of rapid urban growth (Fashola, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
Despite the recognized correlation between urbanization and crime, there is a paucity of research that specifically addresses how rapid urban growth in Ikorodu Local Government Area contributes to criminal activities (Olubunmi, 2023). The surge in population density and inadequate urban planning have created an environment where criminal behavior can thrive. Issues such as unemployment, poor housing, and insufficient public services are exacerbated by the pace of urbanization, leading to a breakdown in social order and increased crime rates. Without a detailed investigation into these factors, policymakers are challenged to develop effective interventions to manage urban growth and reduce crime. This study aims to fill this gap by providing an in-depth analysis of the relationship between urbanization and criminal activity in Ikorodu (Ogunlade, 2024).
Objectives of the Study:
To analyze the extent of urbanization in Ikorodu.
To examine the relationship between urban growth and criminal activities.
To recommend urban planning strategies to mitigate crime.
Research Questions:
How has rapid urbanization influenced crime rates in Ikorodu?
What specific urban factors contribute to the rise of criminal activities?
What urban planning interventions can reduce crime in the area?
Research Hypotheses:
H1: Rapid urbanization in Ikorodu is significantly correlated with an increase in criminal activities.
H2: Inadequate urban planning contributes to higher crime rates.
H3: Implementing targeted urban interventions reduces the prevalence of crime.
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it examines the impact of urbanization on criminal activities in Ikorodu, Lagos State. The findings will aid urban planners, policymakers, and law enforcement agencies in designing interventions that address the challenges of rapid urban growth and its link to crime. By providing empirical data, the research supports the development of sustainable urban environments that enhance public safety (Akinpelu, 2023).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to examining the role of urbanization in the rise of criminal activities in Ikorodu Local Government Area, Lagos State. It focuses solely on local urbanization effects without extending to other regions.
Definitions of Terms:
Urbanization: The process of population shift from rural to urban areas resulting in city expansion.
Criminal Activities: Acts that contravene legal norms and are punishable by law.
